Ewen graduated from the University of Edinburgh Dental School 30 years ago, having first completed a BSc(Hons) in Physiology and Sports Science at Glasgow University. He was commissioned into the British Army in 1995, and after attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he completed his vocational training in Aldershot. He remained in various primary and secondary care roles in the Royal Army Dental Corps (RADC) for 17 years, including an operational tour to Afghanistan as Senior Dental Officer, and 2 years on loan service to the Sultan of Brunei's armed forces.

During his military career, he undertook specialist training in periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute, London, and restorative dentistry speciality training at Guy's Hospital, London, before becoming Consultant in Restorative Dentistry for the military in 2009. This training also encompassed an internship in endodontics at Loma Linda University, California, USA. Ewen is currently a GDC-registered specialist in Periodontology, Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics.

Ewen joined the Peninsula Dental School in 2012, becoming Director of Clinical Dentistry in 2014 and Head of School in 2023. During his tenure as Head of School, the school has come top in the Guardian League Table for Dentistry, and won the Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community.

Among other senior leadership positions held by Ewen, he is a past Chair of the Association of Dental Hospitals UK and Ireland, a Director of Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise, and an Editor of FGDP (now CGDent) Standards in Dentistry. Ewen has published extensively in a range of journals and textbooks, and is active in primary care-based clinical research. He has lectured and examined nationally and internationally, and was recently awarded the prestigious Fellowship (Ad Eundem) of the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). The award was made in recognition of an ‘outstanding contribution to dentistry and significant contribution to dentistry as a teacher, clinician and researcher on a national and international level.’

Ewen commented: Dental Update has been an integral part of my professional development as an undergraduate, and throughout my career beyond dental school. Having worked clinically all over the world and completed numerous clinical exams, Dental Update remains the go to resource in order to keep up to date and ensure best outcomes for patients. I look forward to building on the outstanding work of Professor Trevor Burke who has been a great support in my own professional journey, and that of many others, and will strive to make Dental Update as relevant today as it was 30 years ago when I first qualified.
