Welcome to the special issue on dental materials.

More mature readers, who were taught dental materials in the same way as myself, will shudder at the thought of an issue of Dental Update brimming with eutectic curves and scientific formulae. Have no fear! Dental materials is now taught from a clinician's point of view given that the subject is the foundation for restorative dentistry, which is something most readers will do on a daily basis. Or if you are not doing it, you may be weighing up whether a restorative intervention is needed for a particular patient. That will therefore be the approach in this special issue.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this special issue and to give many thanks to Steve Bonsor, the Dental Update Editorial Board member who conceived the idea and the topics within the issue. Thanks are also due to the authors who responded to his invitation to write for us. I very much hope that you will enjoy this special issue.

PS For those whose appetite for the subject has been stimulated by this special issue and wish to pursue it in more detail, may I suggest that you make a modest investment in Steve Bonsor's excellent book co-authored with Gavin Pearson.1
